Canadian Teachers in OZ

Postby pixie_girl77 » Sun Aug 17, 2008 7:46 pm

I just moved to Clovelly (NSW) from Vancouver BC, and while I don't have the proper visa to work YET, I'm hoping to get it and teach in/around Sydney.
I was teaching at an elementary school (primary) back home for 3 years.

Just wondering if anyone here has done the transition from working in Canada to working here. How does it compare? What are some good websites? What's important to know?

Would love to chat with some fellow Canadian teachers over here :o)

Did you hear back from anyone about any good websites about teaching over there? I would love to know what they are. Thanks.

What kind of visa are you on right now? If you're on a working holiday visa you're eligible to work for an employer for up to 6 months and stay for a year. If not, you can get a working holiday visa if you're under 30.

There is a link for teaching while on a working holiday visa here:
https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/employment/t ... /index.htm

If you haven't looked into it already check out the NSW Department of Education page:
https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/employment/t ... /index.htm

All the information you need on how to teach in NSW you should find there. What it's like teaching there I have no idea.

I am a registered teacher in QLD but have not yet taught here. I will say that you should start getting things in motino though if you want to teach. I applied to QLD several months after I arrived here. It took about 4 months for the registration to come through. Not sure what the delay is like but you might as well start things as early as you can.

You could also do a search for Relief teaching in NSW. I would suggest talking to some local schools, bring along your resume and see what they have to say.

I've been teaching in Melbourne for 2 months now. I came out with a program called TeachAustralia and they set me up with a staffing organization out here who gets me casual relief positions. They take 11% of my pay as commission, but they've had me in a lot of different school that I probably would not have found on my own.

I don't find the schools here to be too much different than those at home. The school system is very similar.

I'm teaching in Perth, WA. I find people to be less formal and almost rude here. Don't get me wrong, I have met some helpful staff and administration from the school board, but I haven't been quite as fortunate with fellow teachers. Students are also not as well behaved as they are in Ontario, with support and direction they are growing however.

I was lucky cause my husband arranged the position before I arrived here.

Goodluck with the job hunt.

Is this the same program as Leading Out? I am looking into coming to Australia at the end of August and they are out of Melbourne. What is Melbourne like? Is it really city like. I would appreciate any information. Thank you!
