Canadian to marry a Moroccan woman

Post Sun Dec 21, 2008 2:45 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum, and I am glad I found it.

I am currently in Morocco. I was wondering if there any Canadians who have experience with the legal paper work required to get married in Morocco to a Moroccan woman.

Also, I am currently going through a divorce from a previous wife that I sponsored to Canada, and was wondering if there any requirement that I must be single before proceeding with the marriage in Morocco under Moroccan law.

Thanks,
Ken

Well, I think under ANY law, you have to be divorced from the first one before you marry the next one. And as Canadian marriage law does not recognize polygamy, even if Moroccan law did, you woudn't be able to sponsor the second wife without divorcing the first, because they wouldn't consider you married.

You might also want to check into the requirements on the sponsorship of the first before you undertak sponsoring the second, just to be sure your obligation to the first does not preclude you from being eligible to sponsor anyone else.

I'm guessing you're familiar with the process itself, but there's a support forum for immigrating to Canada at http://roadtocanada.com
