canadian wants to live and open businuss in usa

I am wondering if it would be possible for my family (myself, husband and 2 kids) to move to the usa if i was to open a wedding photography business there. My husband does not plan to work at all while there.
Do i need a visa or is there a permit i could get? Could my family come with me if i was allowed to move?
Could i work for the business too and also hire ppl?
I once met a man on the beach in hawaii who was photographing surfers and selling the photos-he was canadian and said he did not need a visa, just a permit, is this correct?
