Canadian with a British Passport wishing to travel to us

Post Tue May 18, 2010 12:01 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows how it works... I have a British passport but am a Canadian citizen.I want to travel to the US... I think that last time I went across he said there was a chance I had to pay a fee of some sort. Anyone know how much of a pain it is for me to travel to the US? I don't want to stay in the US for any amount of time I just want to go across for a day to visit family.

Thanks,

Hayley

Unless you are travelling by land, and can enter using the 1 or 2 methods that Cdns can that don't require a Cdn passport, you will need to use your UK passport, which means being subject to VWP and ESTA, which will cost you $10.

Google VWP and ESTA.

Can I just follow up with this? When I look at the ESTA information on-line it specifically says you do not need an ESTA if you are a canadian citizen. So if I have dual citizenship (UK/Canadian) and only have a UK passport, surely I don't need an ESTA as I am a canadian citizen. If I provide my birth certificate to prove this should it not be ok?

Thanks!

The problem is the passport. Remember that VWP is based on passport readability, not birth cert.

So there is no geting to a birth cert in this discussion.

I've sent US immigration an e-mail, will update if they get back to me.
I have a feeling we will have to pay for the ESTA. . . not sure the point for a newborn and a two year old. A money grabbing scheme in my view!

I'm curious to know how this turned out for you?

I'm a Canadian citizen as well, with British passport. I'm trying to determine what is required for traveling to the US using the British passport.

I understand ESTA is required for air & sea, however, if your by land (car) crossing the border, you only require the I-94W, which I'm reading you need to fill out at the border. Possibly, it may be recommended to pursue the ESTA regardless if your crossing by land?

Also, is there any other information or documentation required of you at the border?
