canadian working in canada living in us

Post Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:08 am

My question is: I want to live in Birch Bay, Washington and work in Cloverdale, Canada. I would need to commute daily to work from us to canada. Would I need to fill out a specific application? Do I need to keep an official residence in Canada? How do I get this accomplished and what are my options?

There's no category for this. Unless you're a US citizen or something like that there's no way of doing it. E.g. if your spouse was on H-1B and you were H-4 you could commute to Canada to work.

But you can't just upstakes, move to the US and then commute to Canada. The visitor category requires you to have non-immigrant intent and an abode abroad, which you wouldn't have if you resided in Washington.

People I know from BC who've done something like this usually buy a place in Washington, stay there on weekends and have an apartment in BC they stay in during the week.

There's no way of pretending either because if you're crossing the border nearly every day you would get caught pretty quickly.

I remember seeing some segment on KING 5 where various realtors were moaning about how stupid it was because there were a lot of retirees in BC who wanted to live in Washington but they couldn't do it full-time because of this problem. And what's the point of retiring to Washington from BC if you can only stay there temporarily? Might as well buy a place further south in that situation.
Steve.
