CANADIAN WORKING REMOTELY WITH US EMLOYER

Post Sat Jul 16, 2011 8:42 pm

Hi,

I am a Canadian and will about to be employed ( 6 months contract) as W2 or 1099 in a US Company. The job will be done remotely from Vancouver and almost 0% travel to the US.

I believe that the US will take taxes from my gross income and my question is if Canada will also tax my US income at the end of the year?

I just want to know the big picture when paying taxes to US and Canada with this kind of work situation.

For your advice or suggestion, thanks!

If you are paid 1099, then not taxes should be paid in US. You should not be paid on W-2, since you live and work in Canada. If the firm wishes to employ you as an employee, they should set up Cdn payroll for you.

In either case, you should be taxed as if you were working entirely in BC.
