Canadian working temporarily in US

Post Thu May 22, 2008 8:09 am

I'm a Canadian who recently obtained a 12months contract working on an IT project in the US. My work schedule is such that i travel to the US on Sunday night and return home to Canada on Thursday evening each week. Sometimes i work remotely from Canada. I have no intention of living in the US as I'm fully settled in Canada. I have been on the job for about 3wks now entering the US on a B1 visa. Question is, do i need to get a TN visa? I honestly don't want one if i don't need one; although my profession does qualify for TN.

I'm also thinking of applying for NEXUS to ease immigration queue at the airport. Is this a wise move?

All advise will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need a TN-1. It sounds like you're doing more than a B-1 covers.

The CANPASS/NEXUS card thing I think is a bit of a waste of time, especially given that you probably do need a TN-1.

I went through Sweetgrass POE the other day and there was some poor bastard sat there with a NEXUS card waiting for some guy to show up who knew how to use the computer in their NEXUS office. So that worked out great for him as a timesaver didn't it?

In Alberta especially the NEXUS card I think is so much of a novelty that it causes more problems than it solves, as there are very few people who live really close to the border who cross frequently. Basically just a few farmers and the staff at Coutts, I reckon!
