Hi All -
Thought I'd share some first year immigration adventures with anyone who wants to immigrate to Holland.
I am living on the border of Belgium and Netherlands in Hoogerheide, NL. Since moving here in August of 2009, I have been doing all IND requirements by the book and have found it somewhat frustrating - especially when there is no direct link to the "famed" Inbergering Examen, spending a small fortune on classes to meet the 3 year requirement to write the exam. It is much googling and many beaurocrats who tell different tales about the "right" way about it....sigh...But I digress. On top of this I have paid 800 euros for Drivers Ed lessons so I can get my Dutch Drivers Liscence as I can no longer drive on my International Liscence having been here now one year. Prior to the Practical Exam, I had to write my theory test. The first time I received 81% and the second time, (yes, the second time) I received 84%. I failed BOTH times - finding out that you need 88% to pass. The test is only given in English once a month in my town. So my friendly reader I am now immigrating to Belgium. The immigration process is MUCH friendlier - less beaurocratic AND it the Belgiums will trade my Ontario Drivers Liscence to a Belgian one, no problem. The IND give you the "choice" whether you wish to write their Imburgering Exam or Not. As I took early retirement, I do not need to work therefore I do not have to write this exam. You must register at town hall within 3 days of moving to Belgium (oh, and you don't need to have work set up prior to moving) and then you receive a temporary F card to begin the proceedings. The proceedings are quite easy to follow and very well advertised as to how to go about it. If anyone has a choice as to immigrate to one country or another, strictly for ease of beaurocratic nonsense - I would advise Belgium. Just some food for thought.
Good luck!
Katherine
