Hi Yeah, was just wondering if there were any Canadians in Bristol, UK. Would be great to meet up! Been living and working here for a year now, and I love this city.
Hi there: I can't help with your current request but your topic grabbed my attention because my mother came from Bristol. My father worked for the Canadian trade office there from 1935 to 1941, when it was demolished in the Blitz. He (they) returned to Canada and the office never reopened. His rather colourful boss, the head of the office, was notorious for flying his own single prop airplane under the Suspension Bridge which did not impress the local authorities. Enjoy Bristol (especially the Clifton area); I always did and I still occasionally visit to meet my cousins.
Cheers, John
There are a few Canadians in Bristol. I get together with a few of them on occasion for a coffee (sadly no Timmy's, or Second Cup - but we manage with the Starbucks in Broadmead). Quite a few Canadian bands end up playing here, so we've been to a few of those too.
Glad to hear you're enjoying Bristol. What brings you here?
I've lived in and around Bristol for many years. January probably isn't the best time to see this city in all its glory. Its cold [by English standards] and windy. Bring layers!
If you can, try and see the city in the summer when we have Carnivals, Regattas. and people are generally more amiable. As a setting off point for the rest of the South though, Bristol is well placed - London is a little under 2 hours away by train, and Wales is just a hop & skip over the Severn bridge.
thanks for the advice! I will be in Bristol until June so hopefully I'll make it out to some of these festivals, any recommendations? How cold does it get out there? It can't possibly be colder than Canada in the winter. I was looking into a trip to Cardiff, is there a particular train company that offers the best rates?
Festivals - Your taste in music will probably dictate which ones you should go to. There are a lot of them.
Winter - From a website I googled, min temp last winter was 3ºC and max was 9ºC so it's quite mild although damp. You'll still hear everyone complain though. Personally, I much prefer it to subzero temperatures.
Cardiff - It's only a 40min train ride. If you book in advance, you can get a return from First Great Western for about £6.00.
