Canadians in South Africa

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 2:14 pm

My husband and I have recently relocated to South Africa and I am wondering if there are any social groups for Canadians in South Africa. We are currently in Cape Town, but may be moving to Pretoria in March.

I will be moving with my Family to S.A. in the next few months - to be based in J'burg and would also love to meet other Canadians (I'm not a 'real' Canadian (yet) - but have lived in Canada since 2000 (Ontario - Kingston Area) - I'm a Brit by birth (but don't hold that against me!))

I'm from Vancouver and have been living in Portugal, but I'm really interested to know about foreigners living in South Africa. What is it like, politically and socially? Please fill me in. It's a whole different world, it seems. Thx. Emily

Emily,
We've lived in South Africa (Jo'burg) for about a year now - it's a fascinating place with fantastic weather, lots of cultural things, and lots of outdoor opportunities.
Policically it's very stable, crime is a big issue (but is variable around the country), with Johannesburg being the worst place.
It has a great diversity of people, cultures, climate, etc.

Hi there!

I'm a 27 year old woman from Saskatchewan and am living in East Rand, equal distance from Pretoria and Jo'burg. I hope to find other Canadian women who are also in the area, or even South Africans who have lived in Canada. I'm finding it hard to make friends here as I hardly get out much, but I love to shop, play tennis or badminton, even play cards! My fiance is South African. I'd love to hear from someone!

I am an ex South Africa living in Canada.I moved here in1986 and became a citizen two years ago.I have owned a Home Hardware in Wiarton for 15 years and will have new owners by year end.I am to young to retire am considering going back to Cape Town to work.
I have been back almost every second year and love everything about Cape Town, the smell, weather and the beautiful people. If you get the chance to live there jump at the chance as there is much to learn and understand what makes Africa so sensational :)

Hi, I work for a recruitment agency in South Africa that specialises in placing foreign language speaking people. We are currently searching for Canadian expats for positions in Cape Town in the customer service / online marketing industry. Work permits are available for successful candidates. For more information, please forward your CV to contact@foreignlanguageplacements.co.za

Hi - 27 year old female from Alberta/BC. I'm new to Joburg and am wondering if there is anyone also looking for friends?! It's seems to be so hard to meet nice people here! .... I don't go out much (married to a South African), but love being outside and going for walks/hikes, chatting and talking about life in Africa. Free during the days (not working because of work permit issues)

Would love to meet other Canadians who are interested in making friends : )

Hi! I'm wanting to move to SA, but I'm not sure how I would go about doing that.
Are there any demands needed in SA so I can move there?
