			<title>Backtracking on taxes</title>

			<description>&#x3C;h5&#x3E;&#x3C;a href="http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/canadians-in-the-uk-vf10.html" title="Canadians in the UK"&#x3E;Canadians in the UK&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/h5&#x3E;

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Backtracking on taxes&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Hi,

I'm having a nightmare with my taxes and am hoping some of you lovely Canadians might be able to help me out.

I moved to the UK in May 2007 from Canada and have been living here ever since. For the 2007/2008 tax year I reported only my income earned in Canada (not my UK income) because I did not receive my P60 until after the Canadian tax deadline and was unsure how to report it. In 2008/2009 I filed a T1 tax readjustment and filed the UK income in CAD. For the 2008/2009 year since I also paid tax in the UK, I attempted to complete a T2209 form to receive a foreign tax credit that avoids dual taxation (as put forward by the 2003 Canada/UK tax treaty). I did not fill out this form for the 2007/2008 tax year as it was a year late.

I have only now received a large bill from Revenue Canada for 2007 which is obviously charging me tax on the re-adjusted foreign income. I am aware I could have filed as a non-resident if I live here for 2+ years, but I didn't not know when filing taxes how long I would be here. I also still have a Canadian drivers licence, passport, one bank account and RRSPs.

It should also be noted that I worked briefly in August 2008 when I was home in Canada and inbetween VISAs.

This mess results in a few questions:
- how do I avoid paying this dual tax on my 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 income?
- should I expect to receive another big bill for 2008/2009, or will the T2209 be sufficient to stop this?
- do I fill out another T1 adjustment for 2007/2008 and a first T1 adjustment for 2008/2009 claiming non-residency and only my canadian income?
- Is it possible to file a NR73 changing my residency status from May 2007 or will working in 2008 stop me from doing this?
- Does having a Canadian passport, RRSPs, bank account and drivers license mean I can not file as a non-resident? I have heard different answers to this question.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. I have tried calling the International Tax Office but they are unreachable and mostly useless. I realise I'm an idiot for leaving this so long, but I also don't have a lot of money to pay an accountant. That being said, if anyone knows of a good but affordable acccountant that deals in UK-Canadian tax issues, please let me know.

Kim

Hi all,
  Is there anyone in/around the Bexley area? I've been here with my british boyfriend since July and would like to make some Canadian friends in the area... I do know some canadians in London, but it would be nice not to have to take the train all the way uptown to visit!

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Gym's in London&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

I'm moving to London in 4 days to work for at least a month (potentially two) at a bar or a hostel. In that time I would like to continue working out regularly as I have been at home. Obviously things like running and cardio can be taken care of outside but does anyone know any independent or chains that operate in the central London area (in particular near Victoria station) that offer either weekly memberships or no contract monthly memberships? Not looking for anything fancy, just a place with a decent weight room, benches and the lot. Pools would be nice but that generally ups the price on most gyms. Any info would be much appreciated.

			<description>&#x3C;h5&#x3E;&#x3C;a href="http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/canadians-in-the-uk-vf10.html" title="Canadians in the UK"&#x3E;Canadians in the UK&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/h5&#x3E;
&#x3C;b&#x3E;Free recycling group for all community&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Items we throw away such as bed, television, clothes, furniture, printer, toys, sofa and computer can pass to someone in your community.

Recycling is an effective way to cut down on the use of these limited resources as well as promoting community involvement in the process.

If you haven't heard yet, there is wonderful organization called Free Give ( w w w.freegive.co.uk ). Free Give Group connects people who are giving and getting unwanted items for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills and, at the same time, helping someone in your community by gifting them the item you no longer need. Another benefit of using Free Give Group is that it encourages poeple to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. By using Free Give Group, not only are you able to get rid of your item with the minimum of fuss; you will also be doing your part in stopping another reusable item ending up in a landfill. It's completely free to join and everything posted must be free. Visit freegive home page at w w w.freegive.co.uk

This is a great idea! Encouraging people to reuse and recycle things by giving them away and not sending them to the garbage bin!

Free give group is active in all London boroughs, Canada, United Kingdom and other countries across the world. Find a group near you at w w w.freegive.co.uk

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;How freegive group works:&#x3C;/span&#x3E;

1. You have a television or clothes or furniture or printer or toys you were going to throw out.
2. You join your local Freegive group.
3. You post an offer on your local Freegive group.
4. People respond to you if they are interested.
5. You pick a recipient and arrange for them to collect the item.
6. They take the item away.
7. You let your local freegive group know that the item is no longer available by posting an item TAKEN message to the group.

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;Note:&#x3C;/span&#x3E; If you need an item you can request one on your local freegive group in the same way by posting an item WANTED message to the group and if someone has what you're looking for they will contact you to offer it. If you still have stuff you are trying to get rid of, have you tried freegive group.

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;Tips on how to post an item on your local freegive group:&#x3C;/span&#x3E;

&#x3C;span style="font-weight: bold"&#x3E;*&#x3C;/span&#x3E; Is your item OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED, or RECEIVED?
1. When making an offer, write &#x26;quot;offer&#x26;quot; in the subject line first.
2. Don't put your phone number in it or it will ring off the hook.
3. Ask individuals to email.
4. It's a first-come, serve type of thing.
5. Once your item is gone, make another posting that says it's gone.
6. Always state what area you live in. People need to know whether they have the means to get to your place to pick up the item. Please do not put your full address.

If you still have stuff you are trying to get rid of or to recycling your unwanted items, have you tried freegive. Visit Freegive home page at w w w.freegive.co.uk ...

So, IF Canada makes it to the gold medal hockey game (I don't want to jinx it!), is there anywhere in or near Manchester that my fellow Canadians will be gathering to watch it?
It's on Sunday, February 28th around 8:15pm our time, I think.

I'm moving to Edinburgh in a couple of weeks. What are some good options for pay-as-you-go SIM cards? I just want reasonable local rates and voicemail (no data plan) as I'll be using Skype for calling Canada. I've read that O2 is a good service provider for the area. Where to purchase the card, how to refill? Any suggestions?

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Canadian moving to London work advice&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Hi, Im set to leave for London on March 4th with my Tier 5 youth mobility visa. My plan is to work there for a few months and enjoy the city (also take some small trips in between to Amsterdam, Paris, Barca etc), then move to the Greek islands for the summer followed by Turkey, Croatia etc. I was in Europe last summer and I know London is expensive in comparison to other European cities which is why I will be looking to find work almost immediately after landing..give or take a day or two. My goal is to find a pub or restaurant that offers decent pay and plenty of hours but the main benefit I'm looking for is a place to live. I've been reccomended to find pubs that provide staff live in opporunities. Therse a few websites that say they provide it but all require close to 600$ ahead. I know plenty of people have done this so I can't see why I wouldnt be able to, but any reccomendations would be great. Also I've given myself a realistic time frame to find work in the city before I blow through my cash and I'm looking for plan b's so if anyone has suggestions for other cities in Europe that are good for under the table work I'd also appreciate any info of that nature. I've heard Barcelona, Berlin and Prague are good for this?

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Tax Time Help!&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Hey,

First time poster. I've done a search on the site to try and find a previous thread that helps, but I really can't get my head around it. Any help, links or directions to resources would be appreciated.

I moved to the UK in May 2009. I am here for good. How do my Canadian taxes work? Do I claim taxes for the months in 2009 that I worked in Canada? How? Netfile.gc.ca says you can't claim online if you are a non-resident.

I graduated school in 2008, and the government still owes me credits off my tax for all that tuition. So, I don't want to miss out on anything.

Is there a company, like H&#x26;amp;R Block that can help me from London?

Any help will be appreciated!

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Custom Charges on Package sent from home&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Hi there,

Im not sure if anyone out there can help me with this, but I thought I would give it a go!

My husband and I were in Canada for christmas this year and while out there we bought a new computer but it didn't arrive in time in order for us to take it on the plane. It was sent to my parents house and my mom later shipped it to us. Then we get a letter from parcelforce saying we owe 230 pounds in VAT. I know all the rules about paying vat on imported items. But I'm wondering... if this happened to be an old computer that I owned and just had my mom send it out here for me as I live here now would I still have had to pay vat on my own personal property? That computer we bought was second hand and it was bought on my mom's credit card.

Anyone have any suggestions...has anyone been charged for items they have had sent from home?

Thanks for any help given!!

&#x3C;b&#x3E;Advice: Items unavailable or expensive to bring from Canada?&#x3C;/b&#x3E;

Our family is moving to the UK in March and we are looking for advice from many of you who have lived or traveled for a longer stay in the UK. We would like to know what items we could bring with us that may be to expensive or unavailable in the UK that we are used to normally having in the UK (other than a Tim Hortons w/Drive Thru lol).

Thanks for any advice  &#x3C;img src="http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /&#x3E;
