Canadians studying in Oz

Post Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:30 pm

I'm a student who ended up doing my entire post-graduate education in Oz and ended up migrating to Oz. I know there are plenty of Canadians studying various things here (teachers college, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, optometry, law, pharmacy, Masters, PhDs etc.) because of the extremely competitive nature of Canadian universities.

Been in Oz for nearly a decade and would be happy to answer Q's if there are any.

What's the cost, comparitively with Canadian universities for post-grad programs as an international student? Are there funding options that a Canadian could qualify for?

That would really depend on the post-graduate program you're interested in, and regarding cost it depends what province(s) you are comparing with.

If you are a PR and have been in the country for 2 years or more you are entitled to HECS, if you are not a PR/Citizen then you will have to pay International fees.

If you're looking at getting a Masters or PhD this might be able to be subsidised by your program, even if you are an international student, so it's worth checking into.

Hello there!
I have a few questions because I am highly considering a 1 year study abroad program available through the CREPUQ (In Quebec). At 27, I’m starting a 2nd undergraduate degree in Computer Science. The only University with official ties with the CREPUQ is Swinburne in Melbourne.

1.Is the education system in Australia well recognized as opposed to the Canadian one? Any specific info on Swinburne University of Technology?

2.Any clue if Melbourne is a good place to study considering the usual student life…studying, traveling, partying of course, etc!

3.What’s an average weekly/monthly rent like (cheapest available for students) and what would you recommend, any idea if the ‘live in a family’ type program is cheaper / a good experience?

I guess that’s about all that comes through my mind right now, thanks for helping out it is very appreciated.

Hello,

Did you know of any fellow Canadians who managed to switch over from student visa to skill worker visa during their studies?
