Canadians with EU passports moving to France

Post Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:30 am

Hi there- We are planning to move to France in 2011 and are at the 'research' stage right now. My husband is Irish so myself and the kids will get our EU passports this year for easier travel. Does anyone know what rules, regulations, fees etc. we will have that would be different having dual passports? We both plan to work in France, he will likely transfer and I will look for work in a winery. My husband plans to get his Canadian citizenship before we leave as well.
thanks for any advice!

This is interesting. I am english, with canadian citizenship, and my husband is canadian and we are also planning to move to france in 2010. We are also in the research phase. I do know a little about rules and regulations etc - there are some good webistes i have found that I can email to you. Health insurance is the main thing that has changed in terms of laws; and from what I can gather we may need private health insurance for the first few years...unless you work for someone; or are self employed. I have worked with the wine industry for the past 15 years, and am also planning to work again in this.My husband will also be working. How did you manage to get your eu passoports from here - I would like to get my husband one.

There is no such thing as an EU passport. Every EU country issues their own passports.

If you are a UK citizen, your husband can obtain UK citizenship as well through you -- but NOT from Canada. The application must be lodged within the UK. You and your husband both have to live in the UK for at least three years before you can apply for his UK citizenship.

The situation is similar for Irish citizenship. You need to be resident in Ireland for at least 3 years.

Hi,
This is what I had thought, as we had already spoken to an immigration barrister in the UK regarding obtaining UK citizenship for my husband. Do you know anything about obtaining french passports?

You need to be a French citizen to obtain a French passport!

You can *apply* for French citizenship after having lived there for 5 years continuously. It takes generally another 2 years before they actually grant you citizenship. Among other things, you need to have a job, prove that you can communicate in French, and show that you have no criminal record and are of "good moral fiber."

Hi,

I am also a Canadian with a U.K passport. I am trying to find teaching jobs in France and am not having any luck. I am an Ontario qualified teacher able to teacher kindergarten to grade 6 here. I also have TEFL (teachign english as a foreign languag) as well as FSL (French as a Second Language). I am currently a french supply teacher and really want to move to france and teach. Is is possible to teach english as a second language in a french elementary school? I can't find any information on it. Anyway, any info on any kind of teaching jobs in France would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi there,
"EU" passport probably means, a passport issued by a country member of EU, and yes, this passport gives you a lot of rights in EU in general, so in France too.
You can live and work without any other special permit(maybe some east-European countries still have some restrictions regarding some jobs...).
Anyway, if you want to live and work in France is less complicated if you have an "EU" passport than a Canadian one...
Good luck!...I'll made the same move in 2011...;)

blighty4 I'd be interested in what websites you've found that are helpful for moving to France, and more discussion about insurance. Thx.
