Canucks in Spain

Wondering if there's anything I need to do when moving to Spain (currently in the UK), my wife is Spanish, and according to spanish law I don't need any visa or anything. Can anyone shed any light...

Can anyone shed any light on this? (suppose registering with the embassy is a must?)

Whoey,

You don't need a visa for stays of 90 days I believe, but if you intend on moving here (I've lived here since 1998) you will need a Spanish residency card. This requires a few (unnecessary) trips to Extranjeria, lots of paperwork and patience, but in the end you will end up with your Residency card with the all-important NIE (Numero de identificación de extranjeros) which you will need for identification for almost everything.

We don't have to register with the embassy (unlike Spaniards abroad) but it is recommended.

Note as well that a Canadian drivers license is not valid for more than 6 months if you become a resident. Getting a new one means starting from zero, with classes, fees, tests and the like. Evil or Very Mad

Good luck, and sorry for being months late!

well it took nearly 8 months, but I finally got my card... it wasn't lots of paperwork, but rather quite a lot of patience required... luckily I had my wife along to help out (being a local has it's rewards)
