Car Insurance In The US

Hi,

I have a quick question, does anyone know if I am allowed to get car insurance in California as a Canadian with a BC driver's license? My girlfriend lives in Los Angeles and I want to drive her car (and she wants me to drive too!) when I visit her but I don't have insurance so I can't.

So there isn't a way around this? What about people who live in Canada, yet keep a 'winter' place in the US and keep a US car here? Can an American LLC insure a car?

That will typically require an address, a social security number an d acredit history, none of which you have.

Most Canadian vehicle insurance covers travel in the U.S. but not Mexico.

If you want to drive your girlfriends car, registered in the U.S. to her, then she needs to contact her insurance company to ask if you are covered. Generally, anyone driving another person's car with their permission is covered by the owners insurance policy.

State Farm is the best company to deal with. I dealt with them while living in Arizona for 7 years. My vehicle was registered in Alberta but insured by State Farm Insurance in Arizona. The insurance covered me whether I was in Canada or the U.S. When I traveled to Canada, State Farm provided pink insurance cards for proof of coverage.

I had both an Arizona & an Alberta driver's license. The insurance company only had the Alberta driver's license on file. The Dept. of Motor Vehicles in Arizona insisted that I keep my valid Alberta driver's license.

Talk to your girlfriends insurance company. U.S. insurance is VERY different and much more flexible than Canadian vehicle insurance.

Talk to a car insurance company that provides service in US as well as Canada. I think The Hartford is present across both.

I belive so does State farm! When i first moved to the USA in 2004, I asked our State farm rep if they needed a drivers abstract from Canada, and they said no, as they could obtain it on their own, since they had offices in Canada??
