Car insurance

Postby COPE2 » Mon Sep 14, 2009 7:07 am

It seems like a lot of Canadians would be going through what I am going through now. I recently came to Britain with a Canadian licence, and exchanged it for a British automatic one. I was told I can drive manuals 1 yr after I entered Britain. I want to get insurance for a manual car and drive it, but my licence says automatic only. Most people would assume that I can drive automatic only, even though the DVLA said I can drive both. I have gotten conflicting opinions on this. I called an insurance company, and they told me I'd only be able to drive automatic only, and they never heard of this one year rule. Another insurance company told me that they don't differentiate between automatic and manual licences, as long as it's a full licence and not provisional. The final insurance company told me that they go with what ever the DVLA told me, but she didn't sound sure, as I wouldn't expect someone answering phones would be sure of something so specific. Does anyone know the best way I can get insured to drive a manual vehicle?

Hello,

The only way to be able to drive a manual car is to to take the test for it. If you have exchange your Canadian one for an automatic driving licence you can only drive manual cars.
