Car leasing in the U.S. without a U.S credit score

Post Sat Nov 21, 2009 5:47 pm

I just moved to the U.S. and I am having a hard time getting approved for both leasing and financing programs due to my lack of a U.S. credit score. Does anyone know a finance/leasing company that works with expats? Or any other suggestions?

My company recently transferred me to the U.S. and sent me to a leasing company called Lion Leasing. They work with expats who don't have a credit score. It worked out great! I drove away with my brand new car in less than a week.

Chic points out something that most TNers forget: Your employer hired you becasue they wanted you. And moving you to US comes with a price: a hefty relocatioon package including all the financial assistance, cedit cards mortgage and car leasing should be made available to you.

I got a VW shortly after moving to the US on a TN with no credit score (but with a SSN). The only hitch was I was only able to get a lease for as long as my initial TN lasted (2 years). The dealership also sold Subaru's, but becuase the credit for those went through Chase, it wouldn't have been possible. So I think it depends on the type of car. You'll of course need to provide all your documentation (offer letter, passport, etc). If the first dealer isn't helpful, move on down the road until you find one that is.

I also went that route with VW. It was actually complete luck and I got more than I technically should have. This was in October last year when the dealers were seriously hurting, they gave me 4 year financing on a 1 year TN-1 with no credit history. "Are you planning on staying more than 1 year?" "Probably, like maybe 4 or 5" "Sounds good! approved!" ;)

By "financing" I assume you mean you actually bought the car, and not leased the car.

Thsi is not unusual, since a TN can always get car financing, usually about 2 days after getting the job.

Leasing is another matter...

Hmm.. I was going to paste a link but the site rejected me due to not having enough posts.

The VW foreign professionals program is set up for both financing and leasing, and follow similar rules to qualify. (As a poster above said he was able to get a lease through this program)
