Career in Social Work with little to no experience

Post Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:59 pm

Hello, I've been reading some posts and it's obvious Social Work is one skill that is needed in the UK. But I just finished my MSW and I don't have any other experience for social work. Based on my situation and the need of social workers in the UK, do you think it will be hard to find a job quickly with a work permit visa?

Thanks alot!

hey there,
don't think it'll be too difficult. i've been looking at postings for the last couple months (as i'm waiting to finalize my italian citizenship). i haven't started looking very seriously or applying readily but i dont think you should have a hard time.

i see you're in toronto, i went to school at ryerson :)

Contrary to Sarah1983 I think it will be difficult for you to find a job as a Social worker if you don't have any experience.
Yes they are looking for social workers but they are looking for experienced ones. I think it will be difficult for your potential employer to apply for a work visa for you if you do not have any experience. It will probably be in the requirement for the work visa but you could still try.you never know !

Sarah1983 is ok if she has a Italian citenzenship because that gives her the right to work in the UK without any visa.

I think you will be able to find work with your MSW. I have spoken with a professor in the UK who had her Canadian BSW + MSW + UK PhD and she told me that an MSW is pretty much an over-qualification for social work in the UK.

Good luck! I hope you go for it!

Hey there

How have you gone? Did you make it to the UK? I have lived and worked in the system there and are now based here in Canada. You will have no problem getting work but best be through an agency. Drop me a line and I can point you in the right direction if your still contemplating!

Cheers
