CDN passport renewal / I-94

Post Mon Dec 28, 2009 1:09 pm

It's time for my passport renewal. Given it took me 6 hours to clear security yesterday at Pearson, I'm not eager to travel anytime soon. I'm leaning towards mail-in my passport renewal application. If anybody has done this recently, can you share your experience as to the processing time and any additional quirks that I should watch out for?

Also - what do I do with my TN I-94? Do I unstaple it from my passport and staple it back to my new passport? Or do I submit that to passport Canada along with my passport renewal application form?

Thanks much in advance.

You do not submit I-94 with your passport. That is your official document of legal status in US! No business sending it to Cdn govt.

The photos are still the biggest bone of contention. had you posted last week, I would have advised you to just go to Black's and get pics done there. Cdn photogs know exactly what you need, and all have templates which just about ensure qualified pics. The pics are good for a year.

But, with the new passport application (no longer require guarantor from a list) the process is much simpler.

I just renewed my passport last week in Toronto.
I paid extra for express pickup -- it is $30 extra and you must provide a hard copy of your flight itenerary so that it proves that you need your passport as soon as possible.

Mine was ready in 2 days (I submitted my papers and photos late in the day so they could not do it the next day).

I had a major issue with my passport photos though with the new rules. I will be posting a separate message on the forums regarding this.

As with the TN I-94 slip I was advised to staple it to the new passport AND on the same page underneith the I-94 copy exactly the handwritten date/employer/and I-94 number that was written in your previous passport (usually on top of the stamp). This is just in case you lose the I-94 slip, but as always photocopy your I-94 and keep it in a safe place.

I had no issues when the Immigrations was checking my new passport with my visa in it -- your visa records are on their computer files so they should know (emphasis on the 'should').

May I ask who advised you to in essence, forge information into your passport?!

The I-94 contains all the required info. adding anything in your own hand is ill-advised, imo.

Remember, we are talking about the situation where one has actually lost their I-94 (and even more strangely, apart form their passport?). They are going to want a little better info that your writing in your own passport: a copy of the I-94, or a copy of the old passport page will go a lot farther in convincing an already skeptical CBP.

I was actually advised by a CBP.
One time my I-94 was accidently removed by customs in the U.K., without me knowing until I returned to the U.S. and it was in a newly issued passport. He said having the issue date and I-94 number written down would help.

Anyways, I don't know who to trust these days.

"Having .. it written down" for safekeeping, sure. But forging it in passport?

Carry a copy fo I-94 separate from passport, as has been advised for over a decade.

This information is usually written down in my passport by CBP in addition to the I-94 slip, so it did sound logical since no one knows who writes these things anyways. I trusted the CBP and followed his tip, so I don't think it's forgery as I wasn't replicating a stamp or a signature, and it was done in respectful intension and on an official's comment.

Anyways, after experiencing all kinds of conflicting information in the past, I've learned to keep separate copies of everything and I also keep my previous passport just in case -- it's better to have too much documentation than not enough.
