Cdn set for the US for 5 months

Post Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:03 pm

Hi everyone, I don't know where to turn and have some questions.

I am hoping to go to the US for 5 months, just had a nice visit a few weeks back (only stayed for a week) and would like to visit some more with my friends. My question is this.. what can I use for supporting evidence that I will return to Canada (I have every intention of doing so). I live with my sister currently (not paying rent, so no rental agreement) and I work for myself (so no proof of being allowed X amount of time off). I have bank statements and past taxes, but that's about it. My family all lives in Canada and I just want to hang out with some good friends.

Thanks in advance,

JD

Well, one big problem is that you say you "work for yourself" and that you will be in US for 5 months.

The CBP officer will want to assure himself that you worn't be working while down there. Add this uncertainty to your nebulous ties in Canada...

tax returns are meaningless. You aren't going to be making any income while in US anyways, so they don't car that you pay your Cdn taxes and you aren't applying for a loan. They will want to see a butt-load of cash in your bank account, and details of where you will be staying. Tourists are typically not aimlessly shuffling around the country.

You will be let in, but expect grilling, and expect to be issued an I-94 with a firm date to leave.

Thanks for the input - I technically am in an 'work for self position' as I am an independent contractor, so I choose which days I work and don't work.I do have a decent amount of cash in the bank, and will be staying with my friends while I am about. I really appreciate the input, I'm sure you guys get questions like this all the time.

Thanks again!

Just don't "choose" to work while in US.
