CEGEP/ Canadian Community College degree

Post Tue Feb 15, 2011 4:54 pm

I am a Canadian who will most likely end up in the States. Right now my highest degree is a DEC (basically a community college degree, for anyone outside Quebec) in Liberal Arts. I am considering getting another college degree, possibly in another province. From what I understand, they are roughly the same as an associate's degree from a US community college.

Does anyone know if/how the US recognizes these types of degrees?
Job-wise, would an employer be likely to choose someone with an associate's over my what-is-this-thing-you-call-cegep degree?
And schoolwise, would my having a Canadian community college degree decrease the number of years needed to complete a bachelor's at an American university?

Customs and Border Protection would not recognize a DEC since it is essentially a high school equivalent for educational purposes. If they admit you under TN with the DEC, then a DHS inspector made an error in adjudicating your TN. You may want to hope for a mistake but don't count on it.

Sounds like your plan for getting a 2 year diploma elsewhere is a good idea as provided the education is accredited, that would be accepted for purposes of TN or by U.S. Immigration authorities.

You may have to shop around a bit but it may decrease the time required to do a U.S. Bachelor's depending on the institution dealt with. Accreditation should be your number one consideration.
