i have found the phones in britain to be cheaper because they are on newer technologies. there are a lot of asian shops that sell used phones. also, if you get a phone that works in canada, it doesnt mean it will work in britain. they are on a newer frequency.

If you plan on calling home a lot, I suggest investing in a Magic Jack before you leave. You can plug it into your computer and use it with a computer mic, or you can plug it into your computer and then plug in a standard phone. I got mine at The Source by Circuit City and it was about $50...for another $10 I was able to select a New Brunswick phone number (it comes with a US number) that is local to my friends and family. This allows them to call me for free, and I can call anywhere in Canada or US for free. If I don't have it plugged in when someone calls, they can leave a voicemail and I get an email with the .wav file attached....this keeps me from paying to receive or make international calls....You can also subscribe and get really cheap rates to call other countries other than Canada or US. It was great to have when I first got here because I could call home to let them know I arrived without paying hotel call charges.
