Cert. of citizenship required docs-baby born in US

Post Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:37 am

My husband and I are living in WA and are having a baby this summer. We want to make sure baby gets dual citizenship, so are looking into the requirements for the certificate of citizenship. The docs required for this are below and my question is what is acceptable for item #3? Obviously an infant doesn't have a driver's license and an insurance card isn't photo ID--seems odd to me that this is an option. What have others used? I'm assuming an American passport could work, but need two forms of ID.

1. A birth certificate which lists your parents (issued by
responsible government authorities in the country where you
were born)
2. Proof that one or both of your natural parents were Canadian
citizens when you were born.
3. Two (2) pieces of personal identification, such as a driver’s
license and a health insurance card
4. Other documents, such as a marriage certificate/divorce
certificate and/or a legal name change certificate (if applicable)

the baby will have dual citizenship, without you needing to do anything.

What you are wanting is proof of citizenship. There is no hurry to get this for travel or other purposes, so focus on the thing you will need immediately in this regard: their birth certificate and US passport. That will take you anywhere you need to go.

It will take over a year to get cit card, but again, there is no urgent need for the actual document. Besides, that card will be their for a lifetime, so a nice 2- or 3-yr old picture will be much better than a squirmy newborn one.

Once you have these, you can begin the process of getting their Cdn cit card. You will need to submit (I suggest that you do this thru the Seattle consulate -- as they will make the certified copies for you so you do not have to part with them for more than a week or so, sending them to Sydney NS will take longer, so you will to only send certified copies) their US passport, their birth cert, and one of the Cdn parents' full birth certs. one thing that you will also need to include that is never mentionned is a certified copy of your US status document (either GC or I-94).

See

for fleshed out info. Its older info, but still accurate.

second ID: It is probably not strictly required for infants, but
one thing we got early on was a State non-driver ID. this has proven practical for travelling within US 9and can be used at the border) and we sent it with his cit card application.

Thanks! Glad to hear there's no rush on this. Just for clarification, I'm American and my husband is Canadian (born in Canada). My understanding is that baby's Canadian citizenship will still be automatic (and we still will just need proof of citizenship) since my husband was born in Canada. Correct?

Yes. I assumed at least one of you was either born or naturalized in canada, or the question of Cdn citizenship wouldn't be coming up.
