Chances for getting TN status

Post Thu May 27, 2010 6:22 pm

I am a Canadian Citizen with a Post Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis and Design as well as an MBA in MIS from a non-Canadian university. I had both the credentials evaluated from University of Toronto and they have evaluated them as follows:
"We recognize that the Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Analysis to be of university (undergraduate) level."
"We would consider MBA(MIS) degree to be equivalent in level to a Bachelor's degree, specializing in Business Administration, from a reputable Canadian university offering a similar program."

Besides, I have been working at one of the major banks for more than 10 years and my employment letter from my current employer mentions “Systems Analyst” as the title. Since I was hired, I have had different titles but essentially the job nature and responsibilities remain of a Systems Analyst.

I am trying to get a job in US that would fall under the "Computer Systems Analyst" category of NAFTA list of approved jobs. I would appreciate if someone could outline my chances for getting a TN status and provide my with any valuable advise based on my above scenario.

I believe your chances for the granting of a CSA TN are fairly good.

Forget the postgraduate diploma unless the duration of the program was 2 full calendar years or longer. If it was, you are eligible for a TN based upon your diploma and 3 years work experience.

Focus on your MBA in Management Information Systems. Since it is a foreign degree, you will present your evaluation from U of Toronto when applying at the border for TN. Preferably your MBA transcript reflects a solid concentration in computer science courses, which I believe it would.

So for your complete package at the border for TN, you would require your original foreign degree, evaluation from U of T, petitioning letter, Canadian passport, and fee for $56 U.S.

Provided you had a reasonably solid CS (computer science) exposure on your MIS transcript, I believe your chances are quite good. You just need to find a petitioner now which might be a little more challenging in this economy.

Thanks MC for your comment. Just one more thing, I don't quite understand what you mean by Petitioning letter. Can you please elaborate on this a little bit ?

Thanks a lot.

To get a TN, you need to have the sponsor prepare a "TN letter" which describes your job functions, salary and duration.

Hi All,

I would like to piggyback on this question and add another element to it, which is my case.

I should be getting my employment letter soon and even though I am confident I will get the TN status using CSA there is something bugging me. My degree is in Systems Analysis, but was not obtained in Canada so which advice you would have for me?

Thanks in advance.

The degree does not have to be from North America.

However, if it isn't, you should have it evaluated, to nesure that CBP willaccept it as equivalent to a 4-year US Bach degree.
