Cheap Europe for 6 months

I'm (well 'we' are my partner and I)taking a 6 month sabbatical in a couple years. Where in the Mediterranean region can I live very inexpensively that is close to an international airport I can use to fly to other countries for long weekends? My plan is to rent a house/cottage and use it as a base for periodic short trips to other Mediterranean countries.

If you want Med Living and very low costs, Tunisia is a great option. However, traveling to other countries is a little more expensive from there. A good ticket price return to France is about $300 cdn per person. It balances out though because you can go out to eat for less than $5 per person easy. and a very nice hotel on the coast is around $60 per night and that is in a touristy area.
