If you're a student or under the age of 25 you can get really cheap deals through Travel Cuts. You have to have an ISIC card or a youth discount card. They are both really easy to get! They also offer free or $100 layovers in places like Fiji, Nz and LA!
Check it out.

Try Emirates airlines. They have just opened up a non-stop from Toronto-Dubai, and there are non-stops from Dubai to various cities in Oz. I have found that they are the cheapest airline aside from budget ones. To be honest though, $2300 is about the going rate for flights to and from Canada.

I do remember a few years back there was a deal from LA to Sydney for $500USD + taxes. You may want to check flights out of the US as well.

cheap flights

There are not too many cheap flights but currently Air New Zealand seems to be offering the cheapest, Australia to Auckland NZ and direct to Vancouver.around $2300. There is also Jetstar now flying to Japan. I have been thinking about trying connections from there. I use a site called ITA software and then I go to the airline site and check it out, then I call Flight Centre and they say they will match any price.so you just have to keep looking around. With the new Tiger airlines starting yesterday there is going to be alot of competative prices I hope. Jo

yeah i agree; your best bet is with Air New Zealand, and although $2300 is quite high it's around the standard price i see these days. are you traveling during high season?

We've had 2 flights here so far and we've always used these guys:
http://downunder-travel.com/home

They've always been the cheapest we could find, and they've usually got specials going on too. You can book with them over the phone so you don't have to go in person.

You'll probably need to call them to find out the specifics. Our flights have been for 2 adults, 1 child and 1 infant so we've needed to find the best prices we could.
