Choosing a School in Abu Dhabi

Moving to Abu Dhabi with a 12 year old son in Grade 7 soon.
Would appreciate any advice on choosing a school for him.
Found the Cambridge High School interesting------however it is in Mussafah
(a 35 km bus ride from Abu Dhabi)
Basically want a school with a good curriculum, lots of sports and a school
without an American name.
Thanks again

Hi Marc,
I am a teacher in Dubai, about an hour and a bit from Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Grammer School actually offers a Canadian curriculum. Your son could graduate in the middle east with an eastern Canadian recognized education. However, American Community School has an exceptional sports program for the middle east and the curriculum there is not far off the Canadian. There are a number of good schools in Abu Dhabi.

teaching in UAE

Hey there, I saw this and was wondering if you might give me some advice on finding a teaching job in UAE. I did my undergrad in Geography, taught ESL in Japan for 8mths, then came back and am just finishing a 4 mth teaching practicum and graduating with a Masters of Science in Education and will be certified for Elementary in both Ontario, and New York.

Do you know if your school, or the other you mentioned might consider hiring me anytime after April '06.

Hope to hear from you,
Sincerely,
Angie

Hi Angie,

There are a number of new schools in the UAE. Many of these are looking to hire teachers. Search Associates and ISS are both companies that look to recruit new teachers for many of the overseas schools. Typically these schools will post their positions with these recruitment companies and then hire people at their hiring fairs. Your best bet is to contact them and go to a hiring fair.

Hi Fozia,
there should be no problem registering in a grade 11 program if your daughter has been in a regular grade 10 program in the US.
There are a couple more established schools in Dubai that have an American curriculum. These being American School of Dubai and Dubai American Academy. These schools often have waiting lists for enrollment and can be tough to get into if you don't apply early. There are a number of new schools cropping up in different locations that may be easier to get into. I would confidently recommend either of these two schools.
