Yes, you will need some sort of documentation to prove you are a Canadian citizen

See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/index.asp

The only way you *may* qualify is if at least one of your parents was Canadian born, AFAIK with the new law.

Under the new citizenship laws, you are generally only considered to be a Canadian citizen if you are born in Canada or if you are born to a Canadian citizen who was either themselves born in Canada or naturalized as a Canadian citizen.

If this applies to you, you will need to apply for proof of citizenship. Visit this website for all the details: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp

Not necessarily. If your parents are born outside of Canada, but they gained Canadian citizenship thru *their* parents, You will not likely be eligible for citenship if you are born abroad as well.

That is correct, a Canadian who is a citizen "by descent", which means born outside canada to a Canadian parent born, adopted or naturalized in canada, cannot transfer that citizenship to their children. Only their child's birth in canada or by the other parent being Canadian "otherwise than by descent" will make them Canadian at birth.

agnelson is right-
Here is an article about Patrick Chandler in China- He grew up in Canada but as he was born abroad when his parents were teaching in Libya, his daughter (born in China in June) is not eligible to receice citizenship by descent.
