Claiming Tax

Post Wed Jun 01, 2005 11:29 am

Was anyone aware that if they send in their P60, previous P45s and a quick note to your local tax office that they will send you a refund if you have one coming to you. I just found this out and am getting almost all my tax back that I payed since being here.
Hope this information helps you....I am glad I found out!!!

Hello all. I am currently living and working in the UK on a YMV and I am set to go back at the end of January. I have a couple of questions regarding National insurance and tax refunds. I have heard that any NI contributions made can be refunded in full as you will not be collecting any pension from the country. Is this true? How would I go about claiming it back? Also, I am expecting a tax refund as I have been emergency taxed since I started working in July and I believe their tax refunds are normally done in April. Is there anyone I should contact about having mine done early as I am leaving? I have been out here since May and Have decided to return home as I am quite homesick and have not been able to get a job in my field (plumber) But otherwise had a great time and did alot of sightseeing

Q1: How can I claim repayment upon leaving the UK? (For temporary visitors to the UK only)

A1: To enable HMRC to consider any Income Tax repayment that may be due to you please complete form P85.

Please send the completed form, together with parts 2 and 3 of your P45 certificate of pay and tax (provided by your former UK employer) to the tax office dealing with your UK tax affairs.

If you were employed in the UK for only part of the last tax year, and were still on emergency code at 5 April, you may have overpaid tax for the earlier year too. Your employer should have given you a form P60 showing your pay and tax paid. Emergency code is indicated by the symbols 'W1', 'M1' or 'X' after the tax code. HMRC do not provide any special claim form. Simply ask your UK tax office to make a refund for that year too.

national insurance contributions deducted correctly cannot be refunded as cash. u can possibly opt to transfer the relevant portion of them into a personal (private) pension plan under various countries' laws. tnt is a magazine for aussies and kiwis in the uk, so the fact that canada is not mentioned in the list of countries below doesn't necessarily mean that canadian pension plans are disqualified.

Transferring pension benefits into a pension fund back home is allowable if the accepting pension is approved by the UK regulator (many countries are approved including Australia, NZ, USA, EU countries and South Africa.) AXA will not charge you for this however your home country's pension scheme may charge you for the transfer. Even if a transfer is not advisable you will always be able to have the pension (when it becomes payable) paid into a bank account back home.

below is a list of qualifying pension plans in canada and other countries.
