Clarification on L1 Visa and bringing cars with me

Post Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:37 am

Okay I am on an L1-b visa and my wife will be getting the L2 derivitive when we cross next week (I already have my visa). We want to bring 2 cars with us when we cross the border.

2001 Chevy Cavalier- it is my wifes, she owns it outright and has had it for about 6 years

2005 Ford Escape, - it is mine, I own it outright but only for a couple of days now.

We will be gone for 3 years and then returning to Canada, but I am not sure if at somepoint we would want to sell the cars in the US, we want to keep our options open. So my questions are:

1) what paperwork specifically do we need at the border?

2) is it an issue that I haven't owned my car for very long?

I am not as concerned about the process of transferring the title while in the US as that is covered already in other threads. FYI, we are moving to Minnesota.

You don't need any paperwork really other than the title, it's covered in depth on the CBP website. The key point that isn't clearly mentioned on there is that there is NO DUTY or taxes of any kind if you import your personal vehicle for your personal use. If you're taking it in for more than a year you have to formally import it.

You're supposed to have had the car for a year I think to be exempt from duty as personal effects, but they aren't too terribly strict on enforcing that rule and it sounds as though it was made in North America anyway so it's exempt under NAFTA.

By "Title" does that just mean the ownership papers? i.e. the folded paper from the MTO that I keep with my insurance?

The official bit of paperwork that proves you own it.

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_ ... ng_car.xml

A lot of the stuff in there is a bit irrelevant as far as Canadians go.
