Collecting California Unemployment in Ontario.

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Collecting California Unemployment in Ontario.

Post Wed Dec 01, 2010 11:02 pm

I have been trying and trying to find any help with collecting unemployment from California. I was laid off my L1-B work-visa expired with my occupation so I returned to Ontario where I was told I could collect unemployment from my previous job but the edd.ca.gov website won't take a Canadian address as the mailing address. As well, the phone number I was given to call only gives me a short message to use the website and hangs up without the option to speak to an operator. If anyone has gone through this and/or has any information that may help me out that would be AWESOME!

Before going any further, you should contact service canada for latest information. They may have to get involved at some point anyway to ensure that California properly applies the UI/EI agreement, and may be able to help you get in touch with EDD.

Service Canada site has a page dedicated to cross-border claims.

I am currently collecting unemployment from the state of NY, am Canadian and live in Ontario. I was there on an L-1 Visa and was also laid off but after being transferred back to Ontario for a short time.

I applied for Employment Insurance in Canada first, was denied by lack of hours, then applied in the U.S.A. I could not apply on-line, I had to use their phone number for out of state claimants and did the application with a person on the phone. All is good and am receiving weekly benefits from them. Service Canada has a department called Intra-state claims, in which they assist you to claim from the U.S., you may want to try to get a hold of them (although someone there did try to tell me I couldnt claim from there and was wrong).

Hope that helps
