Computers cheaper in Australia or Canada?

Post Wed May 17, 2006 2:11 pm

Hi there everyone,

Nice to be part of the forum, I think I'll be stopping by every now and then since I'll be in Bundoora for 2 yrs starting in July lol.

Umm I was just wondering if anyone who was there or is there now knows of any good places that are reputable and affordable etc. to buy a desktop computer or laptop. If they have a website it would be even better! THen I could check out what they have while I'm still in Canada.

I'm also debating as to whether a computer would be cheaper to purchase here or in Australia.

Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks again.

Ok Dinod. So computers are more expensive in Australia. You just can't beat discounts at futureshop or bestbuy (especially on laptop open boxes.) I bought my laptop in Canada (Ontario) before coming (4 months ago) and I'm glad I did.

The truth, in my opinion, is that they're a little backwards when it comes to electronics. Internet and television are other issues - even more backwards. Anyway, I'll let you judge for yourself. Here are two sites for the more popular electronics stores in Australia. Don't be fooled by the stupid names, they are proper stores: Dick Smith (http://www.dicksmith.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront) and Harvey Norman (http://www.harveynorman.com.au/viewPage.tho)

Good luck, hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply my friend, I'm actually looking into some open-box laptops, thanks for the links too.

Are you in school over there or working? I'll be in Melbourne doing my Masters degree

Definately buy one in North America.
The electronics here are second rate compared to what we are used to and way overpriced.
I got a laptop from ACER and got the travellers warranty so I can get it fixed anywhere in the world and paid half of what you would pay here.
Get a plug adaptor as the voltage here is 220/240 but the laptop is built for that anyway.
Get a phone on a plan here due to the cost but if your only gonna use it for emergencies, a prepaid card is the way to go. For less than a hundred bucks you can get a basic phone with a card that will give you 200 talk time minutes.
Hmmm, I have learned lots more since being in Brisbane but you would have to ask questions in order for me to not sound like I am rambling, sorry.
Good luck, have fun and take care.
Enjoying the heck out of this country!
