Considering retiring in Portugal

My wife and I (early fifties) are considering retiring to Portugal next year. Would love to hear from any previous Canadian retirees about their experiences in making the move to Portugal. We are planning to visit Portugal in the next couple of months and are wondering how much time (Eg. two weeks,one month?) we need for our first visit to get a good idea about Portugal.
