Cooking in UK

Post Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:16 am

Hi, I am looking to move from France to London for work. Any advice on finding a cooking job. I have both Canadian and Irish(EU) passports! Do I need a permit or VISA? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

You shouldn't need a visa with an Irish passport.

You also shouldn't have too much of a problem finding work as a cook/chef in London, provided you have good experience. I've heard the pay in catering is not great, though, unless you're a "name" chef, so be prepared for that.

Best advice for finding work quickly is to go via the (many) catering agencies. Take a look through TNT magazine, which is free from street bins, for some ideas.

You could try these sites as well:

I think it really depends on what you want to do. I am a chef (12 years experience, teaching, restaurants, food styling and product development). I found it very difficult to find work here doing anything other than kitchen work. I now own a small baking business.
The food community is one thing I really miss from San Francisco, which is where I lived before here in Scotland. I would think that London would have a much better range of jobs though
