Credit? Back to Canada after working in USA for 12 years

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Credit? Back to Canada after working in USA for 12 years

Post Mon Jan 24, 2011 7:35 pm

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is covered anywhere, as I couldn't really find anything with the search. My H1 is expiring in the USA and no more renewals, and I am coming back to Canada. I took a job back in Canada, so now I am a Canadian returning after being a non-resident. I've been reading about the things I need to do about returning to Canada like moving my goods back, re-activating my SIN since it's dormant, but I have a question about my credit.

My credit was very good when I left Canada 12 years ago. I wonder what happens to my credit when I return after 12 years. When I left Canada I closed all my bank accounts and credit cards to claim non-resident for tax purposes. Going back into Canada after 12 years, would my credit be shot? I mean would I even get rejected getting a Cell phone plan? Anyone have any ideas about Canadians' credit ratings after a long absence from Canada?

If you remember, canada does have the same type of credit system as US. You will have no problem going back, since you have no black marks on your history, have a job, and no debts.

Cdns creditors don't rely on those silly majic numbers used in US to give credit. They think for themselves -- and do a better job.

Well I'll see how it goes when I try to get a cell phone contract ;). So what you are saying my credit will be pretty much the same I'm just wondering if it's like when I first came into the US with zero credit history.

Your experience will not be the same as it was when you came down.

Americans moving to canada have no problem establishing their lives. You won't either. Just a completely different (and better) way of doing things.
