Criminal Background Check/Biometrics UK Tier 2 Visa

I am going to attempt to get a tier 2 visa this summer. I am curious how they perform the criminal background check. I know they collect fingerprints but do they just use those for their own database for verifying identity when entering and exiting the UK? Or do they use those to do the criminal background check? Perhaps they just run your name and information like a employer normally does? Any information that could be offered would greatly satisfy my curiousity. Thanks!

They actually do criminal background checks. So if someone has a criminal record, they may have some dificulties getting a UK visa.

Do they do the criminal background check by using the biometric fingerprints you provide or by using your name, DOB, and SIN like employers do?
