Crossing into the U.S with my wife?

Post Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:43 pm

My wife is a U.S citizen staying with me in Canada (Edmonton, Alberta) currently for the past 2 years (married here year and half ago) and has been living here on visitor extensions. Anyways, she misses her family and wants to visit them and we were thinking that it might be a better idea for her to apply from the U.S for Canadian residence since apparently it's also a faster route. If I drove her down there, would it be a problem? I have a mortgage, bank statements, credit card, and I'm a student as well here. Her extension does expire in a few months, so we were thinking of leaving then.

Would there be hassle at the border if we both cross together?

Thank you,

Jay

Could be. Since she has no real status in canada, the presumption will be that she -- which means you -- will be trying to move to US, which you cannot do without applying for visa first.

You will need to carry ironclad proof that you are only going for a visit, and hope the CBP officer is in a good mood.

She doesn't need you to cross to visit her parents.

So how does all this work?

Im American and my gf is Canadian. We are planning on her moving to the states with me im the future. We have plans on getting married but not just yet. When we do, how do we do it?

She does not want to lose her Canadian status, and I have to good of a job to move up to Canada. Is there a such thing as a duel citizenship?

If not how are you guys dealing with this and how can we make it easier on us?

Anything on this subject will help.
