Crossing the USA with Canadian plates

Postby econ240 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 1:52 pm

Hello,

I'll move from Montreal to Mexico next month and want to take my car with me. However, I want to know if I'm allowed to drive my car across the different states I'll pass in the USA. I only have a rear plate and I'm also wondering if that could cause any trouble in states where two are required (if that may be the case). I think it would only take me about 3 to 4 days of driving in the USA.
I'll appreciate all your comments and help.

Thanks,

Alex.

Most Canadian insurers also cover you if driving in the U.S. but you will have to check with your insurance company and policy to make certain, as some do not.

Your single plate should not be a problem but be aware that some State Troopers might be just a bit suspicious if they see a vehicle without a front plate, which is the norm for cars in Quebec. So drive carefully and prudently.

There's no problem doing this, more relevant problem is whether your insurance covers you in Mexico. Get a replacement front plate, otherwise you may get ticketed when you re-enter Québec. Had this happen to a friend of mine in BC, it was quite an expensive ticket as I recall.

Ummm, steve... QC has only issued one (rear) plate for about 30 years.

You really are a westerner.

I lived and worked in Montreal for many, many years so that is something I already knew.

We only have a rear plate in Alberta, front plate is optional for $15. I always get confused between Québec and Ontario plates because they're the same colour.

Anyway you need to comply with the law of wherever you reside.

And thinking about it how did I not remember this because I was rear-ended by a car from Québec once when I was in Florida. Hmm. Memory is the first to go. (Or in my case in the top ten).

Anyway one of the strangest sights I have ever seen on the road was a dump truck with a Québec tag, southbound on I-95 in Florida. I guess even garbage men can be snowbirds...
