Degree evaluation for TN visa

Postby tlam » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:36 pm

Hi All,

My German Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering had been evaluated by UofT (Comparative Education Service) some time back in the early 90's. Today, degree evaluations are mostly done by WES.

Does anyone know if UofT's degree evaluation is accepted at TN visa application or like at most US schools, only WES counts.

Thanks,
Tony

Call the Port that you are going to use and ask if they accept that company. We usually prefer companies that we are familiar with, although I doubt you would have a problem with the original.

UofT's are still acceptable.

Thank you, lawsrlaws and agnelson for your quick replies. It's nice to know that UofT's evaluation is accepted. As per your advice, I'll however call the POE first to make 100% sure before heading out to apply. I'll also ask if the English translation (done by Ontario Ministry of Citizenship) together with my original degree would work out.

The degree evaluation process through WES is rather lengthy since transcripts are required to be sent directly to them from the attended academic institution. German schools normally issue degree certificates and transcripts right away upon your graduation; they don't seem to make any exceptions like duplicates to WES at later dates.

Thanks again for your time,
Tony

Hello,

Applied as a Computer Systems Analyst, and what is written in I275 form:
"... needs to have his degree translated by an accredited institution and needs to provide the original accreditation"

1. It was "credential evaluation report" prepared by Evaluation World; it was NOT translation.
2. For Computer System Analyst I don't need "degree", Diploma evaluation is enough.

Isn't it just mistake of the officer?

Diploma from Moscow State University, plus published scientific work (and republished later in USA).

Yes, I was in a rush and I provided printed copy of evaluation report (PDF file received via Email); I am expecting original to be delivered soon...

Officer verbally asked me "What is exact translation of your degree?"
" - exact translation is Diploma, 5 years of full time study, Mathematician"
" - but Mathematician is not Computer Systems Analyst."

And I answered that 25 years ago there were no any difference. It happened verbally, report contains just "degree translated by an accredited institution", I double-checked NAFTA: Diploma + 3 years of experience is enough. And also "translation" is improper wordings...

Do I need to find different "credential evaluation institution"? Here in Canada all of them need mark sheet (transcript) which I lost 15 years ago and which is (frankly) needed for continuing education or may be for different profession under NAFTA.

Thanks

you were told what you need: a translation of your diploma and the original evaluation.

And before you get all huffy about specific words officer told you, you might want to look at the US guidebook to NAFTA, and realize that for purpose of TN, your diploma is supposed to be from North America. So unless your Russian diploma is actually a Bachelors degree, you will not get TN.

A diploma from outside North America is ineligible for TN.

I provided certified translation into English, and printed original of an evaluation. Original evaluation is digitally signed in PDF format.

Which kind of surface should it be printed? :D

Anyway I am slightly upset... I'll get printed original soon.

And, I have certificates from Microsoft (7 exams), Oracle (3), and SUN (1).

"translation of degree" - it is not required for CSA. What they need is 2 years of post-secondary education (in related area) + 3 years of experience. OR, Evaluation. "evaluation" and "translation of degree" are different things... Translation is "Diploma", evaluation is "Bachelor".

... and I'd be changing my attitude real quick. The fact that you were issued an I-275 tells me you were less than pleasnt at the border, otherwise the officier would simply have informed you verbally as to why you were denied. Now it is on your record.

Remember, your Russian "diploma" is not eligible for TN unless it is a bachelors degree. Period. the 2 year diplomas need to be froma North american accrdited instuitution, not software certificates.

Only non-US or non Cdn degrees are eligible.

And CBP and CIS have a general rule that all documents be translated.
