degree parity

Post Sat Jun 14, 2003 11:43 am

This is a general question for anyone familiar with the topic.
After teaching at a state university for 5 years, my canadian degree has been declared as "not meeting the requirements of the accreditation committee". for that state.
Although, I have engaged the assistance of my university back home (Brock University) which stated the value and scope of my degree, my degree is considered to be inadequate...mainly because the courses don't seem to correspond to the required courses here in the US (different course names..but similar course descriptions..)
As anyone come across a situation whereby a canadian degree is considered be "not as acceptable" as an american degree?(or having no parity...)
I would like to hear from you....
although it is my experience as a college professor that canadian degrees are far more "comprehensive" in their academic validity (we are far better prepared as graduates than most americans holding a similar degree...) there seems to be a perception that our degrees aren't as valuable...Another case of american "arrogance"...?????...I think so...
cheers!

reciprocity doesn't work...

Post Thu Oct 21, 2004 1:45 pm

Unfortunately, when it comes to academics reciprocity doesn't work. Universities, and consequently degrees are sanctioned by a regional accreditation committee(the U.S. is divided into 4 distinct regions..)
The individual states have no say in the matter....it's all up to the accreditation committee and the university involved.
My university decided to uphold the suggested decision of the accreditation committee...much to my chagrin and protestation....
However, I have been teaching at two community colleges that have the same guidelines as the university....go figure...
