Delay in receiving my social security card

Post Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:53 am

Sorry for this extremely long post...

I'm a Canadian citizen and received my TN-1 status on May 18th and waited at least 10 days before applying for my social security card, which was on June 1st. At that time, my status was not showing up on their system and I received a letter stating that my SSN was pending confirmation from Homeland Security. I left the office with a copy of my passport and TN VISA.

It is now July 28th and I still haven't received my card. After speaking with the SS office supervisor, she advised me that Homeland Security had requested the office to fax them a copy of my documents. That was over 3 weeks ago. I'm anxious to receive my card since I cannot receive my occupational therapy license without my SSN, which means I cannot start working without my SSN.

I have contacted 4 departments of Homeland Security, all of which state that they cannot help me. I have a feeling that when the CBP issued me my VISA, he didn't enter it into the system. I even contacted the border where I got my TN status and they advised me that they couldn't do anything unless I showed up there in person. Now the SS supervisor won't even return my calls. I really don't know what else to do and without being able to work, my funds are beginning to run low...

My questions are: 1) is there anyone else I can contact? 2) how much longer should I wait? 3) what other options do I have besides flying back up to the border?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not sure this will make you feel any better - but I know people that have waited 6 months for their SSNs because they applied before they were seen "in the computer system".

I always tell people now: wait 10 days before you apply. if you go there and they tell you you're not in the system yet, don't apply, wait longer and then come back and apply later. applying when you're not in the system can cause crazy delays

Thanks for your reply. That is definitely not good news for me. I guess I have no choice but to wait or return to the border. Unfortunately, the system definitely doesn't work to our advantage.

As far as DHS is concerned, they only received your info from SSA 3 weeks ago. Right now there is little you can do but wait -- at least another week.

There is no point calling DHS, or calling SSA, or going to the border (what for? to get another TN?).

I Received my L1 Visa in late April
Applied for my SSN 30 days later.

I was still not in the system.
So they had to do the whole DHS thing.

After four weeks SSN office called me and informed me they had received approval. Two weeks later I had my card.

Seems to be a hit and miss game
