Denied entry into the US! Advice?

Post Thu Feb 28, 2008 9:50 pm

I'm hoping to get some feedback if this has ever happend to any of you! I'd appreciate any kind of advice you might have.

This past weekend I was denied entry into the US. I have crossed the border many times and have never EVER had a problem until recently. I was accused of having the intentions to set up permanent residence in the US and working illegally at a Spa. The two reasons I was accused of that was:
(1) I did not have a return ticket booked. I have a return ticket, but it was not booked for a certain date.
(2) I had a business card in my wallet from a Spa Operations Manager in Florida that I met over a year ago. (I work at a Spa here in Canada and met her when she came to have a tour of the resort.)
This past weekend, I was going to visit friends in Florida for the next 6 weeks. After being detained at the border for 3 hours, having all my fingerprints and picture taken.they told me to go and "re-establish" myself in Canada. What really got me upset was, when the officer asked me if I had a residence of my own, I told him that I live with my parents. To which he huffed and rolled his eyes at me! I could not believe how unprofessional he was.

My question is: They told me that the next time I cross the border I need to provide Proof of residence such as rent receipts, mortgage payment, hydro bill, phone bill, letter from my employer, how long I've been employed there, pay stubs, bank statements.on and on. and of course a round trip ticket completely booked :-) I have been trying to call a customer service number provided on the CBP website to get some additional info, but have had no luck in contacting anyone! Does anyone know of a number I can call to ask some questions on this matter? I would really appreciate any insight any of you have.especially if this has ever happend to you. I'm so scared that I'll never be able to travel to the US again!
HELP!
Thank You!

It is fairly common for Canadians to be denied entry based on no ties to home country. Pain in the ass yes, but not the end of the world.

Go to Grand & Toy, get one of those DIY Lease agreements, and have your parents sign and date it,(might want to back date it) and then you sign it. There, you have a lease to prove abode. Or, go get your own apartment with a lease! Get a letter from your employer that says you rae on approved leave and you are expected back to work on such and such date (do not put "in 6 weeks" put a specific date!). Get a phone in your name, a car loan, anything that will tie you to Canada that you cannot easily just up and leave.

And Do Not carry anything with you or in your luggage that can even slightly resemble your area of work. As you have already experienced, if you have anything work related on you, they suspect you're tring to go there to stay and work and take American jobs. That's their job, to be suspicious of everyone.

I don't know who you can call, but there is a list somewhere on the CBP website I think that has the list of "approved" proof of ties.

My cousin has been denied access to the US as well. She found a huge difference from boarder crossing to boarder crossing. While the closest one turned her back and said that she "should never try this again" without certain conditions being met, a broader crossing closer to her final destination out east heard her situation and said no prob.
Apparently not all boarders are created equally!

Should I get a "landline" phone bill in my name? Or do you think a cell phone bill is sufficient? Ahhh! So frustrating.

Thank you for the info on the lease agreement. I will be doing that.since I pay rent here anyway!

One more question, Do you think it's better to fly out of a Canadian airport into the US or drive across the border to a US airport?

If you fly from any airport and you're denied entry, you'll lose the money you've paid for your airfare. It is not refundable if you're denied entry. If you drive and you're denied entry, you just have to turn around and drive back home. You're only out a tank of gas.
