Departure tax ?

Post Sat Apr 16, 2011 8:18 am

Hello,

I am a Canadian citizen, in the process of getting the permanent US residency (wife is USCitizen). My wife and I are currently living in Canada and are planning in selling our residence in Canada (50% owned each) soon (before living Canada) and then move to the US as soon as my papers allow.
I heard and am not really understanding departure tax ? What is it exactly and will I get hit by it ?

Thanks. Fab

I know a few Cdns have just recently sold their home prior to moving to the USA, they may be able to assist you as well

Good heavens! What would a romance visa site know about taxes.

Forums.serbinski.com is a better place.

The CRA Emigrants guide would also be useful place to start.

Yes I keep forgetting agnelson--you know all! We actually have a few people that are professionals that give out advice. And like many forums, others have been through the same scenario and are happy to pass that on to others.
And believe it or not there has been bad/incorrect advice given on the Serbinski forum.

And that is the place to point out such errors -- not here.

Departure tax is not subject to "advice". It is what it is, and is pretty clearly spelled out CRA Emigrants guide.

Well in that case, I guess the tax forums, Immigration forums are not required as they can be found in the official guides!! Problem solved!!

Yeah, that is why my answer pointed to the guide, not heartsandflowers.com
