Do I qualify for a British Passport?

Post Tue Aug 03, 2010 11:01 am

I am about to send out my application for my british passport, and before i do i just want to make sure i have been reading things correctly.

I am a Canadian Citizen Born in 1988, and my dad was born in Scotland and now has dual citizenship. Am I automatically entitled to British citizenship? And if so, if i am wondering how long it took for others to receive their passports (how long does the whole process take once the application has been sent?)

Any advice would be great!!!

You are UK citizen by descent and always have been. It used to take about 6 weeks. Unfortunately, now there is an interview process for new applicants, which will likely had several weeks to the process.

Thanks thats great, although are the interviews required? Just because on the high commission web site it says "you may need to attend an interview" so is there a chance i may not have to have one? If i do need to attend an interview, im assuming i would attend the interview at a local british embassy (im in toronto)?

It seems they often say that an "interview may be required" whenever you want paperwork (a visa or a passport) - I wouldn't worry about it.

The interview process is new, so one cannot say how many applicants do or do not get interviewed.

I assume it would be done in your home country. However the pp is being processed in Washington DC, so you may be expected to go there.

Hi,
I'm in the same position - born in '88, Dad is from England, currently living in Toronto - could you please post a link to the application you filled out and let me know what the application fee is?
Also, my parents have a common law marriage - Does this still qualify me?
What kind of documentation proof do I require?
I'm hoping to get a British passport on top of my Canadian, to make European travel easier.
There is so much to filter through, any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

My gf is currently in the same process.

She's Canadian born in '88.
British born father and his parents are British born.

She sent her application to DC and they sent it back (4 weeks) saying she needed to send the 'Long Form' (certified) birth certificate for herself and her father as she had only sent the 'short form' versions.

She returned the application with the correct birth certificates a week ago and is now waiting to see if she gets the passport! If she doesn't get it we'll go the Ancestry Visa route.

I'll let you all know if she gets it.

She'll get it, otherwise they would not have bothered to ask for long-form (which, by the way, is clearly requested on the passport application).

Wow, I need you help! What exactly did you send? Only an application form? Or with birth certificates etc? Did you need to include a payment?
I'm trying to get all my papers together but it's so complicated and the consulate was not helpful... Where did you get your information?
Thanks!!!
