Born abroad to Canadian parents and have lived in Canada for various periods of time, have now lived in Europe for the last 26 years. My European wife and I are considering returning to Canada in semi-retirement. I work internationally, in Canada will not get either the work nor the income level I currently enjoy.
When visiting Canada on a regular basis, we try to look beyond the surface, to attempt an evaluation of what life would really be like on our return.
Life in Europe has for us been very good, both with excellent careers, income, lifestyle etc. Europe has much to offer, in the way of history, culture and beautiful places. Things that are not going well in Europe are the incursion of
ethnic/religious groups that are trying to impress their worldview on the rest of the population. It also seems that, like Canada, European governments do little to resist these developments and appear in fact to go out of their way to destroy the traditional way of life by appeasing the newcomers.
Practical downsides in Europe are high taxation, expensive standard of living, astronomical costs for cars and fuel. Objectively, Canadian housing costs are lower, as are cars, fuel and food than in Europe. Taxation is probably about the same, however that depends on what one is doing workwise. Nature is [still] beautiful and entrepreneurial initiatives are slightly easier.
On the downside, bureaucracy is rampant at every level, government officials display an arrogance that beggars the imagination, financial systems are archaic and Canada is, according to alarming reports on sites like [see(notCanada)], losing it's reputation as one of the places to live.
So all in all, there is much food for thought when considering a move back to Canada; I would appreciate your views as fellow expats.
