Does NSERC trigger J1-status two-year home residency req?

I am a Canadian citizen, and am a science graduate student studying in the US on a J-1 status. If I receive graduate student funding from NSERC, will I become subject to the J-status's two-year home residency requirement?
[I asked my school and they said ask NSERC. I asked NSERC and they said ask the Canadian or US government. The Canadian government just redirected me back to NSERC. The US government seemed to say NSERC funding would subject me to the two-year residency requirement. But my school then told me that they didn't think it would be a problem. So now I really have no idea. Does anyone know? Does anyone have personal experience to share?]

Since you would be receiving funding from your home government (of which NSERC is a part), yes, you'd be subject to the two year home residency requirement.

Eventually you could apply for a waiver of such a requirement from the Canadian government, but I believe that is done at the end of your program, not when you are getting funding. I have no idea whether such requests are, in practice, granted routinely, occasionally , or never.
