Domestic Flights and Temp FL ID

Postby Voltron » Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:40 pm

I have a FL drivers license issued for 1 year that has the word TEMPORARY in the lower right corner. Can I use this as ID for a domestic flight from mainland USA to Hawaii and back? What about a flight that stays within the mainland like FL to GA? Anyone with recent experience? Thank you.

I use my DL all the time to fly domestically. As long as it's valid it's fine. Hawaii is a state so it's domestic.

Actually, if you're not a U.S. citizen you will need a passport because you would be leaving the designated 50 states as of January '07 to my recolection.

So if you're leaving Georgia to fly to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands,,etc and all other U.S territories (Sans Hawaii and Alaska because they are states, you will need a passport as a foreigner. You're Florida ID will not fly with DHS when flying back.

But if flying from Georgia to New York which is technically within the country, an ID is fine.

U.S. Citizens on the other hand can fly with their ID to these respectives states/territories.

Thanks for the replies. Dremani, on one hand your argument makes sense but why wouldn't I just get in the US line and flash my FL ID like everyone else if that's the only ID required for domestic flights. Your argument would imply that the US citizen would need to provide proof of being a US citizen. Any tie breakers out there with recent experience? Thank you.

Direct flights to/from Hawaii, alaska (and puerto rico, btw) are domestic flights, not requiring passports (it has nothing to do with what water or other countries you might fly over).

Check the whti website.

My source comes directly from experience. As a previous international student assistant to the director, I on many occasions had international students stuck in puerto rico, hawaii and the U.S virgin Islands because they failed to bring their passports while travelling. DHS would phone the college I worked for just to verify their status and info..etc They were interrogated for hours because they didn't bring proper documentation while travelling.

CBP officers would repeatedly inform us that student foreigners are required to travel with passports and I-20's when travelling to those areas for "safety and precautionary reasons".

I know this is what it says on the website agnelson but I wouldn't get too confident travelling with a temporary license travelling domestically to these areas. But that's just me!

PR and USVI -- that would be wise.

AK and HI, you don't face CBP on domestic flights. USDA is not CBP.

OK. I could be getting the states mixed up with territories so.. Regardless, if I'm not a citizen I will not travel without a passport. Again thats just me.

And what's up with the login page.. It's a mess. I have to be logging in 2 to 3 times before I can post :?
