Drivers License

My Drivers License expired back in January. Is there any way I can renew it while I'm in abroad? I probably won't go back to Canada for another year or so. thanx.

Which province are you registered in?

I'd check out their driver services webpage and ask them what to do. I managed to get mine renewed just before I came over to Europe, so I'm good for another 5 years. There must be some way to do it.

I believe that in Ontario you can get an extension to your existing license via mail when you are out of the country, but it may only be good for 6 months.

Depending on the country you are in, your driver's license may not be valid forever. In Germany for example my Quebec license was valid for my first 6 months. but I could exchange for a German one without having to do any tests. only some minimal fees (30€).

You should check with the country you are in first.

Hi Clapoti, I am also living in Germany and I´ve been here 6 months. Where did you go to change your licence over for the small fee? I definitly like the idea of just being able to do that instead of doing the tests (which is what I thought I would have to do Smile

I'm pretty sure you can extend it for a short time like someone else suggested. Just a word of warning if you have to hand it in for a UK one.my hubby has a UK license but it only allows him to drive an AUTOMATIC vehicle! They assume we are idiots and can't drive a standard transmission. You are expected to take a test to prove you can drive a standard. So basically hubby has been driving illegally here for 4 years! Shocked He's not bothered since we are going back to Ontario anyway, in the process of moving now. It could be worse, in Belgium I was forced to go back to driving school like a child because Quebec wouldn't sign the reciprocal agreement between Canada and Belgium so as a punishment they won't let any Canadians hand in their license for a Belgian one, unlike our neighbours to the south. Sigh. At least I was able to trade it in for a full UK license unlike hubby, hehe.

Good luck!
