Hi guys,

I thought I would pose some questions to y'all (the Americans have me talking like them already Embarassed).

I have dual American-Canadian citizenship. Born in Ontario, lived there all my life. I just moved to Michigan for a six month internship. The assumption right now is that I will return after that, but I might stay a bit longer.

There are many things I would like to do here that seem to require a MI drivers license, so I thought I would trade in my Ontario license. But they want to punch a hole in my license over the expiry date, making it invalid. But what about when I get back?

Further complicated by this fact is that I don't have a full G yet, just a G-2. It also expires in mid-June. The people at MTO (difficult to get a hold of BTW) said I could just exchange my G-2 back when I return. But I have my exit test back in Canada scheduled for next week, but I would rather not have to pay the fee if they are just going to invalidate my license anyways.

hope this makes sense. I think I'll call MTO again tomorrow for some advice. looking for any kind of insight from someone has done something similar. Smile

When I lived in MI, I traded in my Ontario license for an MI one and only had to take the written test. When I returned to Ontario (several years later) I again had to take only the written test.

Why do you want an MI license if you are only going to be there for 6 months? (What do you want to do that requires an MI license?) Doesn't seem worth it to me. If you change your mind and stay longer, get it then, otherwise you have to pay the fees for two licenses.

Good luck.

when i arrived in michigan in 1999 i had only my g2.they had no idea what graduated licensing is. i didnt offer any info in that regard, and they didnt ask. my experience was the same as you discribed, i did hand it over, they gave me a temp licesne after i did the written test and 2 to 4 weeks later my full michigan license arrived at my door step.

If you're only there temporarily and actually have an exit date, I'm not sure that you'd be legally considered a Michigan resident to be eligible for a Michigan driver's license.

If however you plan *after* the 6 months to stay there, then you can get a state license. Until then, just keep your Ontario license and insurance current, and switch if you decide to stay.

Here's the info on the Michigan DMV website about residency requirements.
