Drivers License ?

Post Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:46 am

Greetings all -

I have attempted to find this information but have failed to do so; so here goes. Any in-put would be a great help.

I have a graduated drivers from Canada..basically a driving permit...when I went to the dmv here in the US...this was the scenario...' I said I am here to re-new this...showing him the card...He replied with O, a Canadian drivers license...we can do that but I needed my ssn - I did not have it yet at that time...but now I do. My question is: Do they not realize the card I showed him was just a permit..it seemed he was ready to issue a US drivers license to me if I had my ssn.? I am in a border state...big thanks for assistance on this.

Wether the state will issue you a DL without having to take a test (or partial test) differs from state to state. This has always been the case. Just because some province has some "graduated" scale for DLs doesn't matter to the state. They will give you a DL with or without restrictions based on your age. Its up to you to know what your driving limits are in your state based on your age.

However, now, you must have your SSN to get a DL in almost all states, regardless of previous place of residence, and may have to show immigration status as well, all part of post-9/11.

It varies state to state and also for the province you are from. I am from NS and recently moved to PA. Although PA will transfer licenses from many Canadian provinces, after some frustrating investigation I discovered they do not have a transfer agreement with NS -- even though their hotline and pamphlets say they will transfer all Canadian licenses. Be sure to specify the province you are from when you are attempting to transfer to get the clearest information possible.
